It’s the same every year. I’m always dreaming of balmy hot days by the beach but frustratingly the sunshine can never be guaranteed in this country. So if you want to get that summer feeling in your home the only thing for it is to create your own tropical interior by bringing the outside in with this seasons latest designs of all things tropical from flamingos to pineapples & lights to wallpaper.
I was working on a photo shoot recently with interiors photographer Malcolm Menzies on a stunning garden studio that I had found in Hackney. The setting was truly tropical – an oasis in such an urban environment. The owners had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve in terms of the design and feel of both the garden and the studio. What really made an impact for me was the statement wallpaper! It is more like a work of art on the wall and compliments the plants in the garden beautifully.
If you feel the dramatic bold pattern maybe too much for your home or you simply haven’t got the time or money to wallpaper. Why not incorporate the tropical trend with a few key accessories that can be used outside or in. I’ve come across a few pieces at the design exhibition and press shows over the last few months that will give a hint of summer without overpowering your home decor.
One of the easiest and most cost effective ways to up date your interior and keep right up to date is to invest in a few palm print throw cushions. Don’t be afraid to match the strong designs with all sorts of colours of sofas. They go with anything and the better the contrast the bigger the design statement. If you get bored of them you can put them away over the winter and bring them out again next summer to refresh your look.
I just love these lights. I wasn’t sure when I first spotted these pineapple and animal designs everywhere earlier in the year but they’ve grown on me. Another great way to introduce a bit of tropical styling to your home.
